Fractured Fairy Tales

For this assignment I choose to look at an interactive tool called Fractured Fairy Tales . This tool would be an excellent one to use when discussing fairy tales with students. There are many ways that teachers can use fairy tales or/and fractured fairy tales in lessons for their class. For some great examples visit  ReadWriteThink , which can give teachers ideas/inspiration to create their own lesson.

To use this interactive tool effectively, teachers should have their students write their own fractured fairy tale. First, teachers should have student read several fractured fairy tales so that they have a good understanding of how to write their own. Once they have an understanding, explain to them that it their turn to write their own; this can be done individually or in groups. Have they start off by using Fractured Fairy Tales as a way to get the hang of writing one. Once they feel comfortable, they can either continue using this interactive tool or create one on their own. If they are writing the story alone, consider using a blog, such as Edublogs.org, to post their ideas/drafts as they work. Or if working in groups, have the groups use Google Docs so that any of them can edit it at any time. Once students have finished the project, either create a website or Wiki Page so that everyone can read them or print them off and display them on a bulletin board.

Another way Fracture Fairy Tales could be used is as a jumping point for something bigger. For example, Have the students use the interactive tool to create their fractured fairy tale, but then have them change it into something visual. Some ideas to consider would be turning it into a comic book, short video, or flash animation. You could have them displayed around the school. Or if you just want to have them share the ideas online, create a community space like a Wiki or Ning Page so that they can post the finish product.

Before planning a lesson, you may want to explore the material under Resources. It contains many books that may be used for displays/examples and some websites that contain online stories/games and videos. There is also a tutorial which takes you through step by step directions and screen shots on how to use Fractured Fairy Tales.
